Timothy Busfield Indicted by Grand Jury on Child Sex Abuse Charges

Actor Timothy Busfield has been formally indicted by a grand jury in New Mexico on multiple charges related to alleged child sexual abuse, following his arrest earlier this year.

According to Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman, the indictment includes several counts of criminal sexual contact involving a minor. The charges were handed down after a grand jury reviewed evidence connected to allegations made against the actor.

Prosecutors Emphasize Child Protection

In a statement released Friday, the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office stressed that safeguarding children remains one of its highest priorities.

“Protecting children is a top priority for this office,” the statement read. “We are committed to pursuing justice for victims and ensuring accountability in cases involving allegations of abuse.”

Allegations Linked to Television Set

The charges stem from claims that Busfield engaged in inappropriate physical contact with a child actor while working on the television series The Cleaning Lady, which was filmed in Albuquerque. Details of the alleged incident were outlined in a criminal complaint filed by investigators.

Busfield was arrested in January after authorities obtained a warrant. He later turned himself in and was initially held without bond.

Judge Orders Release Pending Trial

Following an extended detention hearing, District Judge David Murphy ordered Busfield’s release on his own recognizance. The judge cited several factors, including Busfield’s lack of prior criminal history, his cooperation with authorities, and the current state of the evidence presented by prosecutors.

Busfield has not entered a plea. According to court documents, he denied the allegations during interviews with investigators.

Defense Pushes Back on Indictment

Busfield’s attorney, Larry Stein, said the grand jury’s decision was “not unexpected” and strongly criticized the prosecution’s case.

“A grand jury will indict just about anything,” Stein said in a statement. “What is deeply troubling is the decision to move forward with a case that is fundamentally flawed and unsupported by reliable evidence.”

Stein argued that weaknesses in the state’s case were already exposed during the detention hearing and said the prosecution appears motivated by factors beyond the facts or the law.

“Mr. Busfield will contest these charges vigorously and looks forward to addressing them in open court, where evidence — not speculation — determines the outcome,” Stein added.

Case Remains Ongoing

Busfield remains free while awaiting further court proceedings. No trial date has been announced at this time.

Authorities have indicated that the investigation is ongoing, and additional developments may follow.

This is a developing story.
