One of Hollywood’s most beloved films is getting a high-tech reimagining. The Wizard of Oz, the iconic 1939 fantasy classic starring Judy Garland as Dorothy, is headed to the state-of-the-art Sphere in Las Vegas—this time, not as a traditional screening, but as a fully immersive experience unlike anything audiences have seen before.
Announced by Sphere Entertainment Co., The Wizard of Oz at Sphere will launch August 28 as part of the venue’s growing slate of original experiential content. The production promises to “maintain the integrity of the original while pushing the boundaries of Sphere’s experiential medium,” combining cutting-edge visuals, sound, and spatial storytelling to transport audiences into the heart of Oz.
Developed in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery, Google, and immersive media company Magnopus, the project aims to elevate the legacy of Oz using the Sphere’s revolutionary display system and next-gen technology.
The creative dream team behind the experience is as visionary as the concept itself:
Jane Rosenthal (The Irishman) serves as producer
Ben Grossman (Hugo) handles visual effects
Jennifer Lame (Oppenheimer) leads editing
Zack Winokur (Little Island) directs the creative vision
The immersive format will allow viewers to not only watch Dorothy’s journey through Munchkinland, the Emerald City, and the haunted forest—but to feel as though they’ve stepped into it, guided by the Sphere’s massive wraparound screen and unmatched sound system.
“This is the perfect film to show off what The Sphere can really do,” said Sphere Entertainment’s CEO Jim Dolan. “Our goal with The Sphere Experience is to build a slate that’s just as imaginative and emotionally powerful as the technology delivering it.”
Also announced was From the Edge, another immersive Sphere project debuting in 2026. The production, from Free Solo directors E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, will spotlight five elite athletes pushing human limits:
Free diver Alenka Artnik
Skier Markus Eder
Rock climber Alex Honnold
BASE jumper Katie Hansen Lajeunesse
Big wave surfer Kai Lenny
Filming is already underway in locations around the globe—from the cliffs of Jordan to the deep blue of the Bahamas—using Sphere’s custom-built “Big Sky” camera system, designed to capture footage at a scale that fully activates the venue’s massive digital canvas.
From the Edge is produced by Little Monster Films and Stept Studios, with executive producers including Anna Barnes and Nick Martini.
As Sphere continues to blend cinematic artistry with technological spectacle, The Wizard of Oz at Sphere is shaping up to be a landmark moment—not only for fans of the original film, but for the future of how we experience stories on screen.
