Larry David Sent Harsh Text to Ted Danson After Podcast Invite—’Selfish’
|Actor Ted Danson has revealed that he received a decidedly blunt response from his Curb Your Enthusiasm co-star Larry David after he invited the comedian onto his podcast.
Along with a host of other celebrities—including Rosie O’Donnell, Wanda Sykes, and Richard Lewis—Danson guest-starred as a fictionalized version of himself on the acclaimed unscripted HBO sitcom that concluded in April after 12 seasons.
However, Danson has revealed on a recent episode of his podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, that he didn’t get to spend much time with Curb Your Enthusiasm lead star David outside of their time working on the show.
Speaking with comedian J.B. Smoove, who played Leon Black on Curb, Danson said that David “didn’t really talk to me on the set that much” throughout his stint.
Newsweek has contacted a representative of David via email for comment.
“We had the strangest relationship,” Danson went on, before sharing that he did extend an invitation for David to make a guest appearance on his podcast, which he often hosts alongside his former Cheers co-star Woody Harrelson.
“I’m afraid that I’m not going to see Larry anymore because we don’t have the excuse of work,” the actor said. “I invited him on to the show. I texted him and said, ‘Woody Harrelson and I are doing this podcast. We’d love to have you on. And he went, ‘You and Woody? God that sounds great.’ Then, ‘Nah.'”
Danson further explained that David said “nah with a period, not dot, dot, dot.”
As Smoove, whose given name is Jerry Angelo Brooks, sought to analyze David’s response, Danson interjected: “Are we saying selfish, self-absorbed?”
“No, he just thinks [at] a certain pace,” Smoove responded, before opining that David likely thought about the proposal and “waited for you to ask him. But he’s sitting there hoping your a** don’t ask him.”
When Smoove suggested that Danson erred by giving David “thinking space,” the actor agreed, saying: “I should have said, ‘What time can you come?'”
After telling Danson that he needed to “drive the conversation” with David, Smoove said: “A lot of people do this…and they forget who the f*** they are. You almost forgot that you’re f****** Ted Danson. That’s where you messed up at right there. You forgot who you were. You humbled yourself. You crumpled down to Larry.”
“You know what? We’re joking, but you nailed me right on,” Danson told Smoove. “I told you guys, I’m so self deprecating—which is another way to go, because that makes the other people go, ‘No, no, Ted, you’re wonderful.”
“Handsome devils should never doubt themselves,” Smoove responded.
“Larry blew it. So we don’t need Larry,” Danson joked, before telling Smoove: “Get Larry on the show, and then come be on it with me and we’ll interview his a**.”
Elsewhere, Smoove sought to explain David’s personality and said, “Larry’s very amazing. He’s amazing, smart guy. But I can tell he’s always thinking. Not [a] racing mind… But he’s very, you know, centered.”
He added: “He’s always like, seeming like he’s not protecting himself, but almost like he has this thing where he makes himself smaller…He listens very intently. And when you say something to him, he’s thinking about what you just said.”
“I always wondered what it would be like just me and Larry hanging,” he said, prompting Danson to enquire: “Did you hang with Larry other than [the] show ever?”
“Not much, just run into him a lot,” Smoove replied. “But when we were like, down or we were in a car, I would just tell him crazy stories, you know, things that he wouldn’t be privy to.”
