Keyla Richardson’s American Idol audition wasn’t just a powerful vocal moment—it was the culmination of years of faith, perseverance, and artistic growth.
The 29-year-old gospel singer from Pensacola, Florida, stunned the judges with an emotional and technically flawless performance of P!nk’s “Glitter in the Air,” instantly setting herself apart as one of Season 24’s most memorable contestants.
From Church Choirs to National Television
Richardson grew up singing in local churches, stepping into the spotlight as early as age five. While music was always part of her life, she says it wasn’t until high school that she fully understood the impact her voice could have on others.
Today, she balances multiple roles—artist, educator, and mother. Richardson has spent the past six years teaching music at Life Shifting Learning Academy in Pensacola, while also raising her young son, Drew.
A Gospel Star with Chart-Topping Success
Already an established name in gospel music, Richardson is a verified Spotify artist with more than 10,000 monthly listeners. In 2020, she released her EP So Good, with the title track becoming her first No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart.
The project earned praise beyond gospel circles—actor Denzel Washington revealed in an interview that he listened to the EP every morning on his way to work.
An Idol Audition That Moved Judges to Tears
Auditioning for American Idol had long been a dream for Richardson. In December, locals spotted production crews filming her on Pensacola Beach, hinting that something big was coming.
When she finally stepped in front of judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood, she delivered a performance that left the panel visibly moved—Bryan even wiped away tears.
“I can imagine you blowing the roof off this place,” Richie told her, praising her vocal range and emotional depth.
Richardson’s son, Drew, watched proudly from the audition room. Underwood made sure to include him in the moment, telling him how incredible his mother was. Drew later charmed the judges himself with a short performance of “God Only Knows.”
A Familiar Face to Gospel Fans
This isn’t Richardson’s first time on a national stage. In 2019, she competed on Season 9 of Sunday Best, a gospel-focused singing competition hosted by Kirk Franklin.
Out of tens of thousands of applicants, Richardson was selected as one of just 20 contestants to reach the main stage. She advanced to the final four, earning praise from judges Erica Campbell, Kelly Price, and Jonathan McReynolds.
After the show, Richardson described the experience as deeply affirming, especially as a young mother pursuing her dreams.
“That platform allowed me to inspire people,” she said. “It showed that no matter what you’re facing, nothing can stop you from moving forward.”
Stepping Into Acting with Vivica A. Fox
Richardson’s talents extend beyond music. In 2022, she made her acting debut in the film Due Season, starring opposite Vivica A. Fox.
She portrayed Vicky Waters, a young singer navigating loss, financial hardship, and faith while chasing her education through music. The film also featured BeBe Winans and Dorien Wilson and is currently available on BET+.
Acting wasn’t originally part of Richardson’s plan—but the experience opened a new door.
“Now it’s something I want to continue,” she shared. “That first role changed how I see myself.”
