Kentucky Family Shelters Newborn Calf From Extreme Cold, Warms Her Inside Their Home
A Kentucky family facing dangerously cold temperatures over the weekend opened their doors to an unexpected guest — a newborn calf struggling to survive the freezing weather. The heartwarming moment, captured in photos that quickly gained attention online, shows the calf resting comfortably on the couch beside the family’s children after being rescued from the bitter cold.
The Sorrell family, who live on a farm in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, stepped in when they discovered the calf shortly after birth in single-digit temperatures. According to Macey Sorrell, her husband Tanner went out to check on one of their cows that was about to give birth and found the newborn calf in distress.
A Race Against the Cold
Macey recalled how serious the situation was when Tanner found the animal outside. The freezing weather had already begun to take a toll on the calf’s fragile condition.
“She was just frozen,” Macey explained. “Even her umbilical cord looked like a popsicle. Everything was covered in ice.”
Remembering the loss of a calf to frostbite the previous winter, the family acted quickly. They brought the newborn inside their home to warm her up and prevent further complications caused by the extreme cold.
Warming the Calf Back to Health
Once indoors, the family began carefully cleaning and drying the calf. Macey described how ice and afterbirth still clung to the animal when they first carried her inside.
“I had to wipe everything off and get her dry,” she said. Using a blow dryer, they slowly warmed the calf and helped restore her body temperature. After being fed and dried, the calf began to relax, eventually settling onto the family’s couch.
Their two young children welcomed the calf without hesitation, treating her presence in the living room as completely natural.
“They just crawled right up next to her like it was the most normal thing in the world,” Macey shared.
A Name Inspired by a Favorite Movie
The family’s 3-year-old son, Gregory, quickly decided on a name for the calf. Inspired by a character from his favorite animated movie Cars, he chose to call her Sally — a name that stuck.
The Sorrell family manages around three dozen cows on their farm, and bringing animals indoors during emergencies is not unusual for them. Still, this particular rescue stood out because of the calf’s fragile state when they found her.
Back With Her Mother and Doing Well
By the next morning, Sally was strong enough to be reunited with her mother outside. According to Macey, the calf has continued to do well since the rescue.
Despite the attention the photos received online, Macey says helping animals in need is simply part of daily life on a farm.
“We almost didn’t post the pictures because it’s just something you do,” she explained. “It didn’t feel out of the ordinary to us.”

After the photos were shared on social media, many people responded to the touching scene of the calf snuggled up with the children indoors. The story quickly spread, offering a comforting reminder of kindness and care during harsh winter conditions.
