Kate Middleton Makes Unexpected Public Appearance with Prince William for First Royal Engagement of 2026
Kate Middleton is beginning 2026 with an unexpected appearance!
Princess Kate accompanied Prince William for an unscheduled visit to healthcare professionals at Charing Cross Hospital in London on Thursday, January 8th. The visit represented the couple’s inaugural royal engagement of the new year and their first public appearance since their Christmas Day church attendance with other royal family members.
A Lighthearted Start to the Year

According to The Sun, William acknowledged the new year with humor while greeting staff and volunteers.
“Happy New Year,” the prince expressed before playfully glancing at his watch. “Can we still say that?”
Princess Kate’s Hospital Visit Attire
For the hospital visit, Kate dressed in a maroon suit with a burgundy blouse, matching shoes and a brown handbag. She also chose to forgo wearing her engagement ring, displaying only her wedding band instead of her typical stack of multiple rings—presumably adhering to hospital protocols.

Supporting NHS Healthcare Workers
The Prince and Princess of Wales, both 43, serve as joint patrons of NHS Charities Together and devoted time speaking with healthcare professionals about the challenges they encounter during the winter illness season. They engaged with volunteers coordinated by the charity who work to enhance patient care and alleviate pressure on the broader healthcare workforce.

A Personal Connection
Princess Kate who disclosed her cancer diagnosis in 2024 and finished treatment later that year, announcing in January 2025 that she had achieved remission also conversed with a volunteer who assisted chemotherapy patients, according to Hello! magazine. When the volunteer mentioned that patients and visitors would spend “hours” there, the royal responded, “I know,” before touching her husband’s arm and adding, “We know,” in an uncommon reference to her own cancer experience.
The Princess of Wales observed that working in a hospital can be “quite an intimidating experience” and stressed the importance of staff and volunteers receiving support, per The Sun.
Meanwhile, William conveyed to hospital workers, “You should take great pride in dedicating your time.”

NHS Charities Together’s Impact
NHS Charities Together represents more than 220 NHS charities located in every NHS Trust and Health Board throughout the U.K., contributing £1.5 million daily to the NHS. Through their initiatives, NHS charities help drive innovation, revolutionize care and support staff wellness.
By funding cutting-edge equipment, facilities, green spaces and arts programs, they strive to enhance patient care and also spearhead prevention initiatives in the community that help individuals maintain their health.
Engaging in Meaningful Dialogue
After conversing with staff, William and Kate participated in a roundtable discussion with NHS charity CEOs and Trustees, clinicians, patients and volunteers as well as policymakers and philanthropists, to explore the advantages of contributing to the NHS as part of the healing process, as well as the transformation this can generate for healthcare.
During his previous engagement with the charity, William visited the hospital where Kate was born, in Reading, England. His March 2025 visit commemorated five years since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and during his appearance, he honored the charity for the work it had accomplished to assist staff and patients.
The charity had raised $200 million to support patients, hospital staff and volunteers on the frontline of the health crisis throughout the pandemic years.

Sharing Gratitude
After their visit, Prince William and Princess Kate’s joint Instagram page posted photos from the appearance and stated, “A tremendous thank you to NHS staff and volunteers at Charing Cross Hospital, and throughout the U.K., whose dedicated efforts continue to transform lives, every single day. Honored to serve as Joint Patrons of @nhscharitiestogether and witness how it benefits the workforce and patients.”
First Appearance Since Christmas
Thursday’s appearance marks the first occasion Prince William and Princess Kate have been observed publicly since Christmas Day, when they walked to and from church in Sandringham with other royal family members and their children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7.
They reportedly spent much of the Christmas and New Year period at their residence at Anmer Hall on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

A Meaningful Return to Public Life
This hospital visit carries particular significance given Princess Kate’s recent health journey. Her willingness to engage with chemotherapy volunteers and acknowledge her own experience demonstrates both personal courage and commitment to using her platform to support healthcare workers and patients facing similar challenges.
The couple’s choice to make their first 2026 engagement focused on healthcare reflects their ongoing dedication to NHS charities and recognition of the invaluable work performed by medical professionals and volunteers throughout the United Kingdom.
As Princess Kate continues her recovery journey, her return to public engagements signals both her improving health and her determination to fulfill her royal responsibilities while maintaining authenticity about her personal experiences.
