Josh Brolin has just released his memoir, offering fresh insights about his life. This heartfelt book serves as a reflection on his past and a reminder to fans of his roots.
In the memoir, Brolin recounts a rather alarming method his mother employed in her parenting style. During an interview promoting his book, titled "From Under the Truck," he shared a story about a night filled with heavy drinking that culminated in his mother’s boyfriend collapsing beneath a vehicle.
Childhood Experiences
Josh’s mother, Jane, was dedicated to wildlife conservation. When he and his brother Jess were children, she would engage in a perilous game, instructing local wild animals such as cougars and coyotes to ‘Sic ’em,’ sending them after the boys.
Brolin recalled, "You knew if you didn’t get on the other side of that shut door within a couple of seconds, you’d be cleaning up fresh bloody marks somewhere on your body for the rest of the day."
Despite these frightening tales, Brolin admits he is “loath to say” they were terrifying. He noted during the interview that while his mother could be difficult, he always longed for her presence.
Tragically, Brolin lost his mother in a car accident in 1995 when she was just 55 years old. During the height of his addiction, he often thought that 55 was a suitable age to depart from this world, believing it signified a fulfilling life.
Current Life of Josh Brolin
Now at 56, Brolin reflects on the fact that he has surpassed the age at which his mother passed. He recognizes he had a misguided perception of age and realizes 55 is not truly a long life. After a challenging battle, he has successfully overcome his addiction.
His father, James Brolin, is an actor married to the iconic Barbra Streisand. Brolin has shared insights about his stepmother and her no-nonsense approach, often referring to it as ‘tough love.’
In a past interview, he recounted an encounter where he casually mentioned wanting a glass of wine. Streisand’s response was pointed: "Aren’t you an alcoholic?" He went on to describe her candid communication as a refreshing approach to their discussions.
While reminiscencing about those moments of tough love, Brolin expressed fondness. Now, at 56, he appreciates the advantages that come with age and sobriety.
"I enjoy aging. It’s a wonderful excuse to say, ‘Alright, just relax, you don’t need to be in a constant whirlwind,’" he shared.
Battling Addiction

With his 99-year-old grandmother on her deathbed, Brolin realized he had arrived there hungover from the streets. This moment clarified for him that he wanted to embrace a longer life.
"I knew that was going to be the last time I drank," Brolin recounted. This incident took place in 2013, and since then, he has maintained over a decade of sobriety.
"I love being sober. I have more fun," he expressed. "There’s nothing I experience that I am certain wouldn’t be worse if I were drinking."
It’s uplifting to see Josh Brolin thriving in such a healthy phase of his life. Share this story with other fans so they can understand the length of his remarkable journey!
