Exclusive: Secret Level Clip Showcases Sci-Fi Drama in The Outer Worlds
|To coincide with the second wave of Secret Level episodes dropping, Prime Video has shared the first clip from the video game-based animated series.
The footage, which is exclusive to Newsweek, is from episode nine, The Outer Worlds: The Company We Keep. Taking place in the same universe as hit sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds, which released in 2019, the episode revolves around similar themes of adventure, isolation, and ruthless corporate greed.
In The Company We Keep, as per the synopsis, an orphan from a galactic backwater crosses the cosmos to take a job at a ruthless mega-corporation in the hopes of reuniting with the girl he loves.
Like other episodes in Prime Video’s anthology series, it uses video games as a jumping-off point. Instead of merely adapting the games into straightforward stories, it explores alternate avenues and arcs.
Sometimes it’s a spinoff centring on a side character, other times it adds a narrative where there is none – like in its reimagining of classic video game Pac-Man as a horror thriller (episode six, Circle).
The Outer Worlds video game sees the player board a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy. Decades later, they awake in a new star system where corporations reign and various factions are vying for power.
The first eight episodes of Secret Level premiered on Prime Video December 10, 2024. After a brief break, seven more episodes will release on December 17. The fifteen animated, standalone short stories are set within the worlds of some of the most beloved video games of all time, including Unreal Tournament, Mega Man, Armored Core, and Spelunky.
