Catherine O’Hara’s Final Public Moment: What We Didn’t Realize We Were Seeing at the Time

Famed actress Catherine O’Hara, notable for her roles in “Schitt’s Creek,” “Home Alone,” and “Best in Show,” has passed away at the age of 71, according to media reports. The news was confirmed by two independent sources, although the cause of her death has not been disclosed. It was later learnt that the beloved star had been struggling with a short-term illness.

Further information was later revealed about the circumstances surrounding O’Hara’s passing. The Los Angeles Fire Department reported that first responders were called to an address matching O’Hara’s residence at 4:48 a.m. on the day of her death, where they found a woman, presumably O’Hara, in serious condition. The dispatch audio from the LAFD revealed that the individual was having trouble breathing when the call was made.

O’Hara was an icon, known and loved by fans of all ages. She is perhaps best remembered for her role as Kate McCallister, the resilient mother in the first two “Home Alone” movies. She later won over a whole new audience as the unforgettable Moira Rose on “Schitt’s Creek,” appearing in 80 episodes and helping transform the show into a cultural sensation.

Her illustrious career spanned many decades and features a plethora of beloved comedy classics. O’Hara was a prominent figure in Christopher Guest’s acclaimed mockumentaries, starring in 2000’s “Best in Show” and 2003’s “A Mighty Wind.” She also had a significant role in the “Beetlejuice” series, appearing in the original film and later reprising her role in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” Even in recent years, O’Hara was still actively pursuing new roles.

 

Originally from Toronto, O’Hara was one of seven children. She met her husband, production designer Bo Welch, while working on the 1988 film “Beetlejuice.” The couple tied the knot in 1992 and had two sons, Matthew and Luke.

The last time O’Hara was seen in public was on September 14, 2025, at the 77th annual Primetime Emmy Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Some viewers expressed their concerns about her appearance, commenting on how thin she looked. However, others dismissed these concerns, complimenting her grace and beauty.
