Argentine Footballer Lucas Trejos Wife and Two Children Found Dead in Venezuela Earthquake Rubble

The football world is grieving after a devastating earthquake hit northern Venezuela. Although recovery operations have wrapped up, a particular social media post from the family’s past reveals a heart-wrenching detail.

Lucas Trejo, the Argentine defender, was away when his life changed forever. No one could have foreseen the tragedy that awaited him back in La Guaira.

As information about the catastrophic earthquake unfolds, fans are reflecting on the family’s last moments together. A look at their timeline uncovers a poignant detail regarding their plans.

The Seismic Events That Caught Families Off Guard

On June 24, 2026, northern Venezuela experienced a rare and violent double earthquake. An M7.2 foreshock struck near Yumare, immediately followed by an M7.5 mainshock just 39 seconds later along the Caribbean–South American plate boundary.

These twin earthquakes caused immense destruction across the nation, severely impacting Caracas and La Guaira. Official reports from the USGS confirmed this was the most powerful earthquake in Venezuela since the San Narciso earthquake in 1900.

The disaster resulted in at least 1,430 fatalities and over 3,238 injuries. Currently, more than 68,900 people are reported missing amid the ruined infrastructure.

The Parking Lot Provided the First Chilling Clue

During the disaster, the 38-year-old footballer was in Caracas, preparing to compete with his club, Club Sport Marítimo de La Guaira.

Trejo had just joined the team in late February after securing two league titles in Venezuelan football. He was eager to lend his experience to help the club achieve its ambitious seasonal goals.

When the earthquakes struck, Trejo lost contact with his family. He hurried back to the Playa Grande area, one of the most affected zones by the quakes.

Upon his return, he discovered the Cumanagotto residential complex completely destroyed. His father, José Luis, shared with Noticiero Doce that Lucas expressed his devastation, stating the entire building had collapsed.

Trejo faced an agonizing wait, as his wife’s car remained in the parking lot. For 74 grueling hours, he participated in rescue efforts alongside volunteers and family members.

He desperately searched through the debris, often using only his hands. On Saturday, June 27, the intense search ended in unbearable heartbreak.

Rescue teams found the bodies of his wife, Yanina Maranella, and their two young children, seven-year-old Aarón and five-year-old Ainhoa.

The local club, Deportivo La Guaira, confirmed the tragic news over the weekend. They expressed their profound sorrow and offered support to Trejo and his family during this tragic time.

In an official statement, the club shared in the grief overwhelming their former player, wishing peace for the souls of Yanina, Aarón, and Ainhoa.

The Unthinkable Loss Affecting the Same Football Club

In a shocking turn, Trejo is not the only player on his team experiencing a devastating loss due to this disaster. His Marítimo de La Guaira teammate, defender Héctor Bello, is also mourning the loss of his wife.

Reports indicate that Andrea Bello died during the collapse while trying to protect their baby. Fortunately, their 20-month-old daughter, Alana, survived the disaster.

Known as ‘Kike,’ the Cumanes footballer shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, referring to Andrea as a brave heroine who sacrificed her life for their daughter, leaving him utterly heartbroken.

The Last Post That Feels Different Now

As the football community rallies around Trejo, fans have noticed a devastating detail on his social media. The couple had been married since December 23, 2019, after a ceremony at a municipal civil registry.

Their son, Aarón, was just a small toddler at the wedding, having been born on December 31, 2018. The family had created a beautiful life together before the seismic events shattered it.

Following the tragedy, Trejo quietly updated his profile picture to a family photo from more joyful times. However, it is his last post with his wife from April that has deeply touched hearts around the world.

In celebration of her birthday, Trejo wrote an emotional caption that now feels haunting:

“Happy birthday, my love!!! 😍 May God greatly bless your life and continue fulfilling the desires of your heart… It is such a blessing for us as a family to have you and to move forward in the purpose we share together!”

He added, “With you, everything is always easier and more beautiful. May this be the best year of your life (so far), and let’s keep our eyes and hearts on Jesus, because great surprises are on the way. I love you yesterday, today, and always! ❤️”

The promise of wonderful surprises for what was meant to be the best year of her life is now a painful reminder of a family lost too soon.
