Amy Madigan Reveals the Simple Secret Behind Her 40-Year Marriage to Ed Harris
Amy Madigan is opening up about what has kept her marriage to fellow actor Ed Harris strong for more than four decades — and according to her, the answer is refreshingly simple.
The longtime Hollywood couple, both 75, have been married since 1983. Speaking during an appearance at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards on Tuesday, Jan. 6, Madigan reflected on their enduring relationship while celebrating a major career milestone.

“There’s no special trick,” Madigan shared. “We just love each other, and we work really hard at that — and at our work.”
The actress is currently enjoying widespread acclaim for her performance as Aunt Gladys in the 2025 horror breakout Weapons. Her chilling portrayal of the antagonist quickly became a fan favorite following the film’s August release and helped cement the movie as one of the year’s most talked-about titles.
Madigan revealed that Harris was deeply impressed by her performance. “He loved it,” she said. “He’s known me for a long time, and he recognized all the different parts of me that came together in that character.” She added that their family has been incredibly supportive throughout her awards-season journey. “I’m very lucky.”
The couple share one daughter, Lily, 32, who has followed her parents into the entertainment industry with roles in Chicago Med and the 2025 film Skillhouse. Madigan joked that her family keeps her motivated during the busy awards circuit. “When I say I don’t want to sit through hair and makeup again, they just tell me, ‘It’s okay — you can do it.’”
Madigan’s role in Weapons has earned her a string of accolades, including a Critics Choice Award win for Best Supporting Actress earlier this month. She also received a Golden Globe nomination and said the recognition has been something she and Harris have laughed about together.

Reflecting on the moment, Madigan said the experience is a reminder of why actors keep going. “If you get the chance to work with a great script and a great role — no matter your age or where you are in life — it’s incredibly meaningful. Those are the moments you wait for.”
She is now heading into the 2026 Academy Awards in March with her first-ever Oscar nomination, marking a historic and deeply rewarding chapter in her career.
