The Love of Burt Reynolds Life, Sally Field, Did Not Speak to Him in His Final 30 Years
Burt Reynolds openly acknowledged his deep feelings for actress and director Sally Field, with whom he had a brief romantic involvement. Tragically, he did not communicate with her for three decades.
Even after his passing in 2018, Burt Reynolds continues to be remembered as a Hollywood legend, especially for his charming roles in films that left a lasting impression on fans. At one point, he was among the leading figures in the industry and enjoyed a prosperous career throughout his life.
Reynolds was also renowned for his love for Sally Field, an American actress. Unfortunately, their romance, which he referred to as ‘the love of his life,’ ended with Sally choosing to cut off contact for 30 years.
Both Reynolds and Field have made significant marks in Hollywood. Their relationship had a positive influence on their careers, as Reynolds shared during an interview, revealing his efforts to mentor Field in her professional journey.
The two first crossed paths while filming ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ in 1977. Reynolds was smitten with Field and made an effort to secure her role in the film, which revolves around a illegal beer run.

Reynolds described his desire for the then-30-year-old actress, stating that he wanted her ‘really badly.’ When the director expressed doubts about her being ‘sexy,’ Reynolds defended her, leading to her eventually landing the part.
Reflecting on their relationship, Reynolds noted that fans of ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ were correct in believing they witnessed a real love story unfold on screen. The two starred together in several films, such as ‘Hooper’ and ‘The End,’ in 1978.

Field herself has spoken candidly about their connection on multiple occasions. She shared how Reynolds made her feel attractive and that she endeavored to look her best for him. However, their love story also had its complexities.
The actress recounted that during her time with Reynolds, she felt like she had stopped ‘existing.’ Their relationship eventually concluded after approximately five years together.

Despite their separation, it appeared that Reynolds never truly moved on from Field. He admitted in an interview that he had feelings for her since she was just seven years old.
Reynolds was open about his affection for Field and also discussed the pain of their breakup.

In 2016, he expressed that the sense of loss from their relationship lingered. He mentioned that Field never reached out after their split, although he remained optimistic, noting that her son had mentioned she often spoke of him.
Years later, in a 2015 interview, he referred to Field as the love of his life and took responsibility for their breakup. Field, however, did not respond to these claims about his feelings until after his death.

Field later revealed that she felt humiliated when news of Reynolds’ infidelity became public, describing herself as a ‘fool’ upon hearing from family about his cheating.
On September 6, 2018, Reynolds passed away from a heart attack at the Jupiter Medical Center in Florida, at the age of 82. Following his death, Field was prepared to discuss Reynolds’ description of her as ‘the love of my life’ during an interview.

Field remarked that she always felt ‘flattered’ by Reynolds’ affectionate remarks but also viewed him as a complex individual. In the wake of his death, she acknowledged that he would always hold a place in her memories, and she cherished their time together.
In her memoir, Field reflected on her relationship with Reynolds. Despite his passing, her view of their experiences remained unchanged, offering an authentic account of their time together.

In speaking about her book, ‘In Pieces,’ the 79-year-old actress shared insights into her experiences. Field characterized Reynolds as ‘confusing, complicated, and hurtful,’ yet acknowledged there was also love and care, expressing her desire to avoid causing him any more pain.
‘I felt glad that he wasn’t going to read it, he wasn’t going to be asked about it, and he wasn’t going to have to defend himself or lash out, which he probably would have.’

In her book, she discussed how Reynolds’ success had already taken a toll on him by the time they met. Field detailed how his controlling nature extended to her, admitting they were a ‘match of flaws.’ She further noted,
‘Blindly I fell into a rut that had long ago formed in my road, a pre-programmed behavior as if in some past I had pledged a soul-binding commitment to this man.’
Although Field cherishes her memories with Reynolds, she made it clear that she did not pursue any kind of relationship with him prior to his death. Additionally, she confirmed that they had no communication for decades.

Field and Reynolds, who was once her sweetheart in the early 1980s, remain a memorable couple in the eyes of fans. Unfortunately, they maintained a distant relationship until his passing, having not spoken for the last thirty years of his life.
Field, a two-time Academy Award winner, acknowledged that Reynolds played an important role in her life, despite their brief relationship. She admitted they often experienced turbulence during their short romance.

The ‘Steel Magnolias’ actress mentioned that she continually sensed his attempts to connect through the media, both during their relationship and after. Yet, despite their estrangement, she insists that he will always hold a special place in her heart.
