Nolan Wells Mom Points to Something Suspicious in His Snapchat Messages After He Vanished — and His Best Friend Is Now Speaking Out

Recent interviews with Nolan Wells’ family have uncovered new details that raise further questions about the 18-year-old’s enigmatic death. As his loved ones search for answers, two specific moments from his last hours have become particularly troubling for them.

These revelations follow comments from the teenager’s best friend, who addressed a viral video that many online have connected to the case, offering his perspective while stating that "none of this adds up."

Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, went missing after a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island with friends. His body was found two days later, but the exact events leading up to his death are still being investigated.

In the aftermath, Wells’ family has hired civil rights attorney Ben Crump and initiated an independent inquiry to gain a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding his death. In a recent television interview, his parents and Crump discussed their belief that several questions remain unresolved.

The Search for Answers Continued After Wells Was Found

One significant issue, according to Crump, involves conflicting reports regarding Wells’ last known whereabouts before he disappeared.

Crump mentioned that a young woman who had been in conversation with Wells informed investigators that he planned to return to the boat, whereas his friends provided a different account.

"The fact that they said Nolan was talking to a young woman and she said that he said, ‘I’m going back to get on the boat with the boys.’ The boys said that he said he was going to stay with her," Crump explained. "And so that’s an obvious contradiction."

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump discusses what he says are conflicting accounts of Nolan Wells' final known movements. He pointed to differing statements about whether the 18-year-old planned to return to the boat or remain on Horn Island, calling the discrepancy "an obvious contradiction."

Wells’ Last Appeal Has Become a Major Question for the Family

During the interview, Crump revealed another crucial detail that has become a central concern for the family. He noted that a video recorded that day showed what he characterized as an argument shortly before the teenager vanished.

"This video, you can hear an argument going on where Nolan is saying, ‘Give me my freaking phone, what are you freaking doing?’" Crump stated.

He added that Wells’ phone subsequently went missing, a sequence of events the family believes warrants further investigation as the inquiry continues.

Crump also questioned whether it was plausible that Wells would choose to stay behind without his cell phone. "I don’t know any teenagers […] who say, ‘I’m going to stay behind, and I’m going to leave my phone.’ I mean, no young person leaves their cell phone."

Ben Crump recounts a detail he says has become central to Nolan Wells' family's search for answers. The attorney said a video captured what he described as an argument over Wells' phone before the 18-year-old disappeared, raising additional questions about what happened in his final hours.

Then His Mother Checked Snapchat

When Wells’ phone was finally returned to his parents, they began examining it themselves. His mother, Christine Wonsley, noted one finding that immediately caught her attention after accessing Snapchat.

Wonsley shared that Wells had two Snapchat accounts, but she couldn’t find the type of content she typically expected from him during outings with friends.

"I’ve seen Nolan whenever he snaps. Like, when he goes and he’s having fun, like, he does videos. Like, there was absolutely nothing. No saved videos. And even my sister was like, ‘Yeah, that’s suspicious, you know.’"

She explained that there were no saved videos or photos, which felt odd to her considering how recent the trip had been.

Christine and Elmore Wonsley speak about the questions that have lingered since their son's death. Christine said she found the activity on Nolan Wells' two Snapchat accounts unusual after his phone was returned, telling viewers the absence of saved photos and videos struck her as "suspicious."

His Best Friend Says the Viral Video of the Argument Isn’t What Many Assume

As discussions regarding the investigation have escalated online, Wells’ best friend, Jayvon Williams, has also publicly addressed a video circulating on social media. In a separate interview, Williams was asked if Wells was the person heard arguing in the clip.

His answer suggested he disagrees with that assertion. "But in that video, I feel like the voices are too clear. Like from the side, it’s too clear for it to be that far away for it to be Nolan arguing," Williams stated.

Instead, he believes the voices actually belong to another friend, adding, "And then also that altercation, it sounds just like my other friend that got into an altercation on the boat. And they were trying to — like as he was in the altercation that was calming him down — they were trying to get him out off the island."

"They were trying to get him back to land because he was just losing it," Williams recalled. "He was just very hostile. Like, he was just, like, mad. Like they were just trying to like — the parents on that boat were trying to get him out," he added.

‘None of This Makes Sense’: Wells’ Best Friend Says He Hasn’t Been Interviewed

Williams also mentioned that he has not yet been interviewed by law enforcement, despite being well-acquainted with Wells and the group that spent time together that day. Although this surprised him, he expressed his willingness to speak with investigators whenever necessary.

"Like I said, I have nothing to hide, like that’s my boy, and I want him to find justice," he stated. He also added, "This whole situation… none of this adds up honestly."

Authorities reported that Wells was last seen near the island around 3 p.m. His close friend, 17-year-old Williams, intended to ride on the same boat but couldn’t board due to capacity issues. He took another boat but still met with friends on the island, recalling their last encounter after 4 p.m.

Wells reportedly spent part of the day talking with a girl he knew and socializing with others on the beach. During their time together, he pulled Williams aside and told him that he loved him.

Another friend, Trace Carter, spoke with Nolan and asked him to check in once he made it back home safely. Wells reportedly promised to reach out that evening.

Unfortunately, he never did. Wells did not return with the group, and authorities were informed that he had decided to stay on Horn Island. By midnight, his mother, Christine Wonsley, had contacted the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office to report him missing.

July 5: The Search Expands Across the Water

The search ramped up the following day. Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a request for assistance from local authorities at 12:26 p.m. and issued an urgent marine broadcast. A helicopter was also dispatched to scour the area.

A command post was set up at the Lake Mars Boat Launch as multiple agencies joined the operation, including the Coast Guard, National Park Service, Gulf Islands National Seashore, and state and local authorities.

The volunteer rescue group United Cajun Navy also participated in the effort. As crews searched the waters and surrounding areas, Wells’ family and friends anxiously awaited updates.

July 6 – 7: A Heartbreaking Discovery and a Quest for Answers

The search concluded in tragedy on July 6, when a U.S. Park Service ranger discovered a body near the northwestern tip of Horn Island. Later that day, Christine Wonsley confirmed that the remains belonged to her son.

Dental records officially confirmed Wells’ identity the following day. His family then engaged civil rights attorney Ben Crump, whose team announced plans to independently investigate the circumstances surrounding the 18-year-old’s death and seek access to records, witness statements, and autopsy results.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office also requested photos, videos, and any firsthand accounts regarding anything unusual that occurred on Horn Island on July 4.

As attention increasingly focused on Wells’ last hours and the friends who were with him that day, the mother of one of those friends publicly shared her version of events.

A Judge Breaks Her Silence on Events from July 4

In a detailed Facebook post, Judge Ashlee Cole addressed rumors surrounding her family and explained her reason for deactivating her social media account. Judge Cole stated that her son, Warren, "loved Nolan dearly" and expressed concern for her children’s safety amid the growing attention surrounding the case.

She also revealed that she and Wonsley have known each other well before this tragedy, having graduated from the same high school and shared the same community.

"I graduated high school with Christine Wells-Wonsley. We are from the same community. I have the utmost respect for her and all of the Wells family. We mourn the loss of Nolan with them. Our prayers have been and will continue to be with them," Judge Cole wrote.

She then explained what she said happened during the critical hours before Nolan’s disappearance. "My husband and I were not at Horn Island at any point on July 4. No one in our family is trying in any way to interfere with the investigation by law enforcement or to otherwise obstruct the family and law enforcement’s search for answers."

"Warren was interviewed by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and cooperated fully. He last saw Nolan around 3 p.m. on July 4, and they left around 4:30 p.m. when the boat was taking on water due to a problem with the bilge pump. Nolan chose to stay on the island and return inland later with another group of friends."

The judge also addressed her choice to deactivate her Facebook account. "Yes, I am a judge. I also value transparency. I apologize if anyone was offended that I deleted my social media. There were no nefarious motivations in my deleting my social media. Social media has a lot of positives, but a whole lot of negatives," she elaborated.

"We live in a world of click-baiting. Sad, but true." Judge Cole expressed her hope that her statement would redirect focus toward Wells’ family, their mourning, and their need for support.

Wells’ Family Pursues Another Autopsy

As inquiries about Wells’ last hours persist, his family has taken an additional step in their pursuit of answers. In an interview reported by WWL Louisiana, the attorney representing Wells’ family indicated that his body was sent to Washington, D.C., for an independent autopsy.

Mississippi’s state medical examiner had already conducted an autopsy, but no official cause of death has been disclosed. Results from the state, including toxicology reports, may take weeks to be completed.

Authorities have stated they believe Wells likely drowned and currently do not suspect foul play. However, Crump has highlighted what he describes as inconsistencies in the accounts of Nolan’s final movements.

Deleted Messages Raise Another Concern

The family’s concerns also extend to Wells’ cellphone. According to a report, Crump mentioned that Wells’ friends told police he wanted to stay on the island, where he was last seen talking to a girl, but "they took his cellphone."

Crump stated that Wells’ family later grew worried after the phone was returned to them and they discovered that messages had been deleted.

"That’s not adding up to them. The fact that when the family gets the cellphone back … they’re trying to understand why there are deleted messages, and so it’s very concerning to them."

As investigators continue to work to determine exactly what transpired on Horn Island, Nolan Wells’ family asserts their focus is on uncovering the truth rather than speculation. Until more information comes to light, they believe the conflicting accounts of his last hours, the alleged plea for his phone, and the unusual activity they found on his Snapchat are questions that cannot be overlooked.
