Judge and Mother of Nolan Wells Friend Breaks Her Account of July 4th on Horn Island — and Her Version Raises New Questions

What started as a Fourth of July gathering with friends turned tragic for the 18-year-old. Shortly after his body was found, a new account from the mother of one of his friends has provided another perspective on how that day unfolded.

Before this account came to light, a holiday trip had transformed into a desperate search, a heartbreaking discovery, and an increasing call for clarity.

Nolan Xavier Wells, from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, went to Horn Island with friends on July 4, 2026, departing from a private dock in the Ocean Springs area.

According to authorities, he was last seen near the island around 3 p.m. His close friend, 17-year-old Jayvon Williams, had intended to ride on the same boat but was unable to board due to capacity limits. Williams took another boat but met up with friends on the island, recalling their last encounter after 4 p.m.

Wells reportedly spent part of the day chatting with a girl he knew and mingling with others at the beach. He even pulled Williams aside at one point to express his love for him.

Another friend, Trace Carter, asked Wells to check in once he returned safely. Wells reportedly assured him he would reach out that evening.

However, he never did. Wells did not return with the group, leading to the belief that he opted to stay on Horn Island. By midnight, his mother, Christine Wonsley, had reached out to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office to report him missing.

The following day, the search escalated. Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a request for help from local authorities at 12:26 p.m. and issued an urgent marine broadcast. A helicopter was also dispatched to search the area.

A command post was set up at the Lake Mars Boat Launch as multiple agencies joined the effort, including the Coast Guard, National Park Service, Gulf Islands National Seashore, and various state and local authorities.

The volunteer rescue group United Cajun Navy also participated in the search. As crews scoured the water and nearby areas, Wells’ family and friends anxiously awaited news.

Tragedy struck on July 6, when a U.S. Park Service ranger discovered a body near the northwestern tip of Horn Island. Later that day, Christine Wonsley confirmed that the remains belonged to her son.

Dental records were used to formally identify Wells the next day. His family then hired civil rights attorney Ben Crump, whose team indicated plans to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the 18-year-old’s death, seeking access to records, witness statements, and autopsy results.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office also requested any photos, videos, or firsthand accounts relating to anything unusual that occurred on Horn Island on July 4.

As focus increasingly shifted to Wells’ last moments and the friends who were present that day, the mother of one of those friends publicly shared her perspective on the events.

In a detailed Facebook post, Judge Ashlee Cole addressed rumors surrounding her family and explained her reasons for temporarily deactivating her social media account. Judge Cole stated that her son, Warren, ‘loved Nolan dearly’ and expressed concern for her children’s safety amid the heightened scrutiny of the case.

She also disclosed that she and Wonsley had known each other long before this tragedy, having graduated from the same high school and sharing a community.

Judge Cole wrote, ‘I graduated high school with Christine Wells-Wonsley. We are from the same community. I have the utmost respect for her and all of the Wells family. We mourn the loss of Nolan with them. Our prayers have been and will continue to be with them.’

She then discussed what she claimed transpired during the critical hours leading up to Nolan’s disappearance. ‘My husband and I were not at Horn Island at any point on the 4th of July. No one in our family is attempting to interfere with the investigation by law enforcement or to hinder the family and law enforcement’s search for answers.’

‘Warren was interviewed by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and cooperated fully. He last saw Nolan at around 3 p.m. on July 4. They departed around 4:30 p.m. when the boat experienced issues, and Nolan opted to remain on the island to return later with another group of friends.’

The judge also clarified her choice to deactivate her Facebook account. ‘Yes, I am a judge. I also value transparency. I apologize if anyone was offended that I deleted my social media. There were no malicious intentions behind my decision. Social media has its positives, but it has many negatives as well,’ she noted.

‘We live in a world of clickbait. Sadly, that is the truth.’ Judge Cole expressed her hope that her statement would redirect focus back to Wells’ family, their sorrow, and their need for support.

As uncertainties about Wells’ last hours continue, his family has taken additional steps in their quest for answers. An attorney for Wells’ family shared that his body was sent to Washington, D.C., for an independent autopsy.

Although Mississippi’s state medical examiner had performed an autopsy, no official cause of death has been disclosed yet. The state results, including toxicology findings, may take weeks to be finalized.

Authorities believe that Wells likely drowned and do not suspect foul play at this time. However, Crump has pointed out some contradictions in accounts of Nolan’s final moments.

The woman who was reportedly conversing with the deceased teenager around 3 p.m. stated that after their chat, ‘Nolan said he was going back to the boat,’ according to Crump.

‘And then the boys on the boat said, ‘No, Nolan told them he was going to stay with her.’ So there are conflicting accounts. She’s saying he went to get on the boat. They are saying he didn’t get on the boat. So which is it?’ he questioned.

Concerns also extend to Wells’ cellphone. According to a report, Crump indicated that Wells’ friends told police he intended to stay on the island, where he was last seen with a girl, but ‘they took his cellphone.’

Crump mentioned that Wells’ family grew worried after the phone was returned, as they found deleted messages.

‘This doesn’t add up for them. The fact that when the family received the cellphone back, they noticed deleted messages is very concerning for them.’

The uncertainties surrounding Wells’ final hours have also spilled over to his social media, where an old post is now being viewed with suspicion. In May 2025, Nolan shared an Instagram carousel filled with images that seemed to depict a vibrant and active chapter of his life.

The post featured Wells in various settings, including casual outings, school events, beach trips, formal gatherings, and family celebrations.

The graduation-era images in the carousel underscored how young Wells was and how much life appeared to be ahead of him. That contrast has made the speculation around his death feel even more unsettling.

Some pictures showed him with groups of friends, while others included family members, such as his parents. His caption was simple: ‘Enjoyed it.’

Family-centered images in the carousel added a personal layer to the story, showing how many people were connected to Wells' life. They also made the later speculation feel even more emotional for online followers.

At the time, the carousel seemed like a typical post that many young people share to commemorate a busy chapter — a collection of memories, smiles, and meaningful connections.

Wells' post gathered moments from school, social events, and outings in the months before his death. Afterward, some users began focusing less on the memories and more on the people who appeared around him.

However, after Wells’ passing, the comment section attracted a different kind of attention. Some users began to scrutinize the images, focusing not only on the photos but also on the individuals surrounding Wells.

Their comments hinted at a growing online theory that those close to Nolan might know more than what has been disclosed publicly.

Beach and friend-group photos from the same post are now being revisited as commenters question who was truly close to Wells. The images have become part of the online search for answers, even though no conclusion has been made public.

One user appeared to question the people featured around Wells, writing, ‘Is this one of his ‘friends’ [sic]?’ Another comment took a sharper tone, stating, ‘these folks were NOT your friend [sic].’

These comments were not the only ones suggesting that viewers were closely examining the people in Wells’ circle. One netizen provided a lengthy observation on the contrast between those labeled as Wells’ ‘so-called friends’ and others who seemed to publicly mourn him.

Several photos in the carousel showed Wells among peers and teammates, which later became a focus for users sharing theories in the comments. Some observers began comparing who was publicly mourning him and who appeared to stay quiet.

‘Another thing I’m noticing is that all his so-called friends have private pages, while his black teammates, who aren’t really in his friend group, have public profiles and are all extending condolences to his family. Very interesting [sic].’

Formal-event images from Wells' post added to the sense that the carousel captured a major chapter in his life. Months later, those same memories are being pulled into a darker conversation about trust and unanswered questions.

This comment added a new layer to the online speculation, as people began comparing who was publicly expressing their thoughts, who was remaining silent, and who had made their accounts private.

A comment directly linking the suspicion to Wells’ friends stated, ‘Let’s be serious, someone knows what happened, especially the friends [sic].’

While these remarks do not prove anything, and no public conclusions have been reached regarding Nolan Wells’ fate, they illustrate how quickly a seemingly joyful social media post can morph into a much darker narrative.
