Bobby Darin & Sandra Dees 2 Grandkids Are All Grown up & Resemble Their Famous Grandparents — Meet Them
The bond between grandchildren and grandparents is a timeless tale that often warms the heart. For the grandkids of two iconic artists from the 1950s, this connection also features a striking resemblance.
Bobby Darin was a multi-talented musician, singer, and actor who started his career as a songwriter, releasing his first single in 1958. Following his success on the music charts, he was eager to make his mark in films.
In 1960, Bobby landed a pivotal role as a junior lead alongside Sandra Dee in the film ‘Come September,’ which starred Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida. While filming in Italy, Bobby quickly began to pursue Sandra.
Bobby made sure to express his feelings for Dee at every opportunity. Their son, Dodd Mitchell Darin, shared a memorable moment:
He [Bobby] was standing on the shore wearing a yellow suit, and she [Sandra] was in a boat just pulling in to dock. ‘Will you marry me?’ He called out to her. ‘Not today,’ she replied.

Dee was not impressed with Bobby’s approach and had no qualms about voicing her disapproval. She found his antics manipulative and was not interested in him, as noted by Dodd.
Undeterred, Bobby tried to win her over with childish tactics. Whenever he spotted Dee, he would yell, ‘Sandra Dee has a flea.’ He also charmed Dee’s mother, Mary, in an effort to get closer to Sandra.
Eventually, his efforts bore fruit when Mary persuaded Dee to join Bobby for a carriage ride. This pivotal moment allowed Bobby to express his feelings. Dodd recounted:
Bobby told her he acted as he did because he was scared. He was out of his element. He wasn’t the main attraction. He was falling in love with her and was at a loss how to get her to pay attention to him.

Shortly after, the duo became inseparable, sharing laughter and romance throughout Rome. They eloped on December 1, 1960, much to the dismay of Dee’s family. However, Dee’s feelings for Bobby had transformed, and she shared with Dodd:
I do remember my thoughts that first morning when I woke up in bed with my husband. I thought I had never felt so safe in my life as I felt with Bobby.

By 1963, the couple faced significant challenges, and their youthful antics caught up with them. Bobby grew suspicious that Dee was involved with her co-star Peter Fonda in ‘Tammy and the Doctor,’ leading to a divorce request relayed through an associate.
Dodd asserted that Dee dismissed the accusations and insisted her relationship with Fonda was purely professional. Their separation was brief, and they reconciled, welcoming their son Dodd in 1961.
However, turmoil struck again in 1966 when Bobby saw Dee talking to Warren Beatty at a gathering hosted by Joan Collins and Anthony Newley. This time, he had their psychiatrist inform Dee of his desire for a divorce, which unfortunately became final.
The late 60s were particularly tough for the former couple. Bobby became increasingly angry and troubled, aware of his declining health due to sepsis and dementia. On his son’s 12th birthday, he called from the hospital to wish him well.
Dodd remembered that his father sounded frantic and emotional, expressing his love and remorse for not being present. Just days later, on December 19, 1973, Bobby passed away at the age of 37 following open-heart surgery.
Dee reached out to Kay Gable, the widow of Clark Gable, stating she was coming to collect Dodd. Kay, whose son John was born posthumously, comforted Dee and advised her to allow Dodd a peaceful night.

Honoring His Parents’ Legacy
Despite their divorce, Bobby’s passing deeply affected Dee, and Dodd observed his mother’s struggle with the profound loss. He shared:
My mom never recovered from my dad’s passing. They were divorced and hadn’t been together for years but a lot of her died the day he died.
When Bobby was posthumously inducted into ‘The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’ on January 17, 1990, Dodd accepted the award in his father’s honor. He also took on the responsibility of managing his father’s music catalog and promoting his parents’ legacy.

In 1993, Dodd married his soulmate, Audrey Tannenbaum, who was a costume designer for NBC’s ‘Mad About You.’ They welcomed two daughters, Olivia Darin and Alexa Rose Darin.
The Granddaughters of Hollywood’s Iconic Couple
Dodd’s eldest daughter, Alexa, is named after Dee, originally named ‘Alexandra Zuck.’ In a 2014 interview, the Darin sisters expressed that while they didn’t inherit their grandfather’s musical talent, they were inspired to follow in their late grandmother’s footsteps.
Alexa shared her passion for writing as a means of self-expression and expressed interest in modeling and acting. Olivia echoed her sister’s sentiments, mentioning her enjoyment of modeling, dancing, and participating in plays, along with her acting lessons.
Both sisters have dabbled in modeling and showed an affinity for the camera from a young age. Alexa noted her fortune in owning her late grandmother’s iconic white sunglasses. Reflecting on her grandfather, she said:
I’m a sucker for Grandpa’s song Dream Lover. And I think I look a lot like him. His strong, Italian features were definitely passed down to me and some say I was lucky enough to get my grandma’s eyes and lips.
Conversely, Olivia mentioned watching several of her grandmother’s films, with ‘Gidget’ being her favorite. She also enjoys listening to her grandfather’s music and remarked:
I think I look like my grandma, but a brunette version of her. And I have a pair of her high heels. My mom has her charm bracelet and some of her jewelry.
Following Their Grandparents’ Path
Alexa expressed her desire to learn more about her grandparents. Though the Darin sisters never had the chance to meet Bobby, who died when their father was just 12, they were grateful to have spent time with Dee.
Alexa remembered her grandma sharing captivating stories about life in the spotlight. Dodd also recounted exciting tales about his father’s experiences to Alexa and Olivia. Regarding their grandparents, Alexa commented:
I think one of the most interesting facts about my grandparents is that when my grandfather died, he and Sandra were not married. After seeing them as a couple in countless photos, not to mention movies, it was hard for me to picture them apart.
Deep down, Alexa and Olivia wished they could sit down with their grandparents and ask them endless questions. Olivia expressed her desire to spend an entire day with her grandparents, while Alexa longed to meet Bobby.
The older Darin sister was intrigued by her grandparents’ fascinating lives and wanted to understand them personally. Despite having seen their images and heard countless stories, she felt a strong yearning to converse with them.
The sisters acknowledged that they learned about their grandfather through their father, who shared stories and videos with them. However, it wasn’t until Alexa was 15 and Olivia was 10 that they truly grasped the extent of their grandparents’ fame and the impact they had on many.
Both girls plan to attend college, inspired by their grandfather’s resilience and determination to pursue their dreams and aspirations. Alexa graduated from college in 2018.
In addition to sharing glimpses of her life online, Olivia has posted nostalgic photos to honor her late grandparents. These pictures served as heartfelt tributes to the legendary stars, Bobby and Dee, receiving admiration from many.
One photo captured the beloved couple in their prime, accompanied by their only child, Dodd. Another image showcased the couple’s undeniable chemistry, vividly evident even in black and white.
Although Bobby’s untimely death meant he never witnessed his son becoming a father, Dodd has made every effort to share stories of their grandparents with his daughters.
Alexa and Olivia not only carry a striking resemblance to their famous grandparents, but they are also inspired to pursue paths similar to those of Bobby and Dee, and we hope they achieve their dreams.
