Lionel Richie, 77, Rushed to Hospital Mid-Concert After Pausing His Performance — Fans React

Fans gathered in Minnesota for an evening filled with classic hits were met with an unexpected moment involving Lionel Richie.
Lionel Richie had just begun his latest tour when attendees observed him struggling during the performance before he suddenly disappeared backstage. Footage from the concert, an ambulance ride, and a recent health update have clarified what happened next.
The singer was eager to continue entertaining the audience, but as videos later indicated, something seemed off well before fans learned he had been taken to a hospital.

A Tour That Had Just Started
Richie recently joined forces with Earth, Wind & Fire for the Sing A Song All Night Long Tour, which spans 26 cities across North America. The tour kicked off on June 24 in St. Paul, Minnesota, and is slated to wrap up on August 14 in Austin, Texas. The two groups had previously toured together in 2023 and extended their collaboration into 2024, attracting enthusiastic audiences and positive reviews.

Produced by Live Nation, the tour will make stops in major cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Toronto, Atlanta, and San Francisco. Reports indicated that these performances were promoted as a reunion of two iconic acts.
For Richie, this tour signifies another achievement in his extensive career. As noted by Live Nation, the Oscar winner and four-time Grammy recipient has sold over 125 million albums globally, judges on American Idol, and recently published his New York Times bestselling memoir, Truly, in September 2025.

‘That’s a Bad Sign’: Unusual Moments Captured
During his performance on June 25 at the Grand Casino Arena, Richie suddenly seemed unable to continue as usual. While singing ‘Dancing on the Ceiling,’ one of his most lively songs, he took a seat on a platform onstage but continued to perform.
He addressed the audience humorously while recognizing that this was an unusual situation for him. ‘Now, what I have learned about my years of being in the business. When you are feeling busy, sit your [expletive] down. Ha ha ha ha ha ha! And when you are feeling strange about yourself, sit your [expletive] down,’ he said.

He added, ‘Now, I want you to know that’s the first time in the history of ‘dancing on the ceiling’ I’ve done it sitting down. That’s a bad sign. That’s a bad sign, y’all.’
Music critic Jon Bream, who attended the concert, later shared on social media that Richie felt ‘dizzy’ and ‘strange’ while performing ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’ seated during the opening night at Grand Casino Arena.

The Concert Ended Unexpectedly
Soon after, fans learned that the performance would not continue. Richie’s saxophonist, Dino Soldo, made an announcement stating, ‘Unfortunately, Lionel is not feeling well. He won’t be able to continue with the show, and additional information will be available. Thank you for your patience and your understanding. It’s been amazing. Safe travels home, everyone. Thank you. Thank you so much.’

According to reports, paramedics were called to meet Richie backstage shortly after. Sources connected to the singer indicated that he was taken by ambulance to a hospital, although the transport was described as a precaution.
At that moment, his health condition was still unclear.
Doctors Recommended Rest as Fans Await Updates
Concerned fans did not have to wait long for more updates. The United Center later announced that Richie’s concert scheduled for June 26 in Chicago had been postponed due to doctors advising him to rest and recover fully.
The venue also stated that the tour is expected to continue once he has healed. While representatives have not revealed what caused the incident, the announcement provided reassurance to many fans who were worried about something more serious.
Fans Found the Videos Difficult to Watch
As clips from the concert circulated online, viewers expressed their concerns in the comments.

One viewer remarked, ‘He was smart, he knew something was wrong.’ Another said, ‘I can’t watch. He’s one of my favorites.’ A third commenter speculated, ‘I would not be surprised if he was overall fatigued and dehydrated, and possibly coming down with a sudden illness. He’s 77 years old and touring takes a toll on an artist.’
In other clips, concert attendees shared their anxiety for news. One fan asked, ‘I was in the audience, is there an update? Truly worried.’ Another commented, ‘I get dizzy just watching this. Too much going on with lighting and effects ect. So scary.’
Richie Once Faced a Voice Crisis
This recent incident also reminded some fans of another troubling time in Richie’s life. In the 1990s, he suffered from a mysterious ailment affecting his vocal cords, undergoing four surgeries before doctors identified diet-induced acid reflux as the cause.
In an interview, the singer reflected on that era as ‘about as close as you ever would’ve come to a nervous breakdown’ due to his fear of never being able to sing again. He stated, ‘You don’t want anybody fooling around down there. This is your identity,’ adding, ‘I never really thought that it would end.’
For now, fans seem to find comfort in the fact that Richie was hospitalized as a precaution and advised to rest, while many await confirmation on when the Sing A Song All Night Long Tour will resume.
