Jon & Kate Gosselins Son Dedicates a Birthday Post to the Woman He Calls His Real Mom — and Its Not Kate

On the same day Collin Gosselin revealed his memoir that promises to expose what viewers never witnessed behind the scenes, he shared another post that spoke volumes about his upbringing.
For a long time, the public discourse regarding Jon and Kate Gosselin’s son has revolved around family conflicts, differing narratives, and the events that led him away from the limelight.
As he gears up to release “In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood,” Collin seems increasingly ready to express his own viewpoint. This was evident not only in his memoir announcement but also in a heartfelt message showcasing a relationship he has cherished long after a significant phase of his family’s saga concluded.

Collin Is Ready to Reveal What Wasn’t Shown
Collin is set to share his version of a narrative that many believed they already understood. On June 17, the 22-year-old announced his upcoming memoir, “In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood,” nearly ten years after the conclusion of “Jon & Kate Plus 8” and “Kate Plus 8.”
The book’s striking cover art features a stark paparazzi shot of Kate Gosselin with her hand over a young Collin’s mouth. In a detailed Instagram post revealing the memoir, he expressed that his childhood included much more than what was portrayed on television.
He mentioned that he had kept many of his experiences private for years, adding that writing the book compelled him to revisit some of the most challenging moments of his life while helping him to discover his voice.

Understanding the Family Turmoil
To grasp why Collin subtly distanced himself from his biological mother, it’s essential to reflect on their tumultuous public disputes. The tension escalated when Kate spoke out to detail serious allegations against her son.
Kate alleged that Collin experienced severe psychiatric issues and had undergone years of inadequate outpatient care. She claimed that he was institutionalized by emergency room doctors after unpredictable outbursts, including one involving a weapon.
According to Kate, these drastic actions were advised by specialists to protect the family, friends, and even their pets. She maintained that his violent behavior frequently targeted Jon, his sister Hannah, and others.
Kate also publicly supported her daughter Mady’s social media posts that echoed these allegations. She concluded that Collin remained a seriously troubled young man with a skewed perception of reality.
Jon swiftly responded to his ex-wife’s claims, labeling them as cruel falsehoods. He revealed that a judge had granted him temporary sole legal and physical custody of Collin in 2018.
Jon explained that Kate did not even attend the court hearing and had not communicated with Collin since he was in the sixth grade. He remarked that Kate was incapable of controlling her abusive remarks towards a child she had not seen for years.

Another significant person in Collin’s life was clearly unbothered by Kate’s harsh remarks. Based on Collin’s recent post, she has been a steadfast supporter through difficult times.
The Woman He Refers to as His ‘Real Mom’
This protective figure is Colleen Conrad, Jon’s long-term ex-girlfriend. When Kate’s accusations became public, Colleen took to Instagram to defend the boy she cares for deeply.
Describing Kate’s statements as “derogatory,” Colleen shared a poignant detail about Collin’s past, mentioning that he was institutionalized for three years with only three visits from his biological mother.
She pointed out that he was left entirely alone without proper education during his time in the facility. Despite this daunting situation, Collin managed to turn his life around, discontinued all medications, and disproved his previous diagnoses.
Colleen proudly stated that he achieved a 4.0 GPA, received a top ROTC award, and successfully enlisted in the Marines. She emphasized that Collin lived with her for many years, describing him as respectful, never violent, and consistently kind to those around him.
She recalled how he always treated her like family, even gifting her beautiful white roses whenever he visited. Their strong bond reached a heartwarming moment during a recent dual celebration on social media.
Coincidentally, Collin’s significant book announcement coincided with Colleen’s birthday. The 22-year-old posted a heartfelt tribute to honor her, boldly calling her his real mom. He included a photo of them smiling together along with an emotional caption:
“She is the strongest woman I know, who stepped in at the toughest part of my life and CHOSE to be a mother to me. Happy birthday to my wonderful, hardworking, passionate, and I could go on… to my real mom ❤️ I love you so much.”
He further added, “Also I had to add a Rascal Flatts song, because we always sing Rascal Flatts songs together.” Collin did not stop there and added another comment.
It stated, “The love you feel for a mom you were given is incredible. But the love you feel for a mom that CHOSE you is something so powerful. I am so fortunate ❤️.”
The birthday celebrant was so touched by the tribute that she replied publicly, “This made me cry and yes I would sing it to you, Jesse, and Jordan! That is my wish! I’ll always be here for you and you are my son. I love you!”
The Journey of Collin and Colleen’s Relationship
Colleen’s relationship with Collin developed during a tumultuous time for the Gosselin family. She was in a relationship with Jon for seven years before they officially separated, as Jon explained.
Their relationship deteriorated during the pandemic, particularly after Jon’s intense 11-day hospitalization due to COVID-19. They parted ways in early 2021, just before Colleen was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Even though Jon intended to relocate to Florida, Collin and his sister Hannah decided to remain in Pennsylvania for their education. Jon stayed nearby to assist Colleen during her cancer treatments using his Amazon health insurance.
Once Jon officially moved out, Collin actually resided with Colleen until he reached 18.
A Tribute to His Father
With his childhood struggles openly shared, Collin is ensuring to acknowledge those who truly cared for him. His praise isn’t limited to just his chosen mother.
Just a few days after his significant announcement, Collin shared a Father’s Day post dedicated to Jon on June 21. He wrote:
“I love you and I am so grateful for the bond we share and how we have continued to grow closer and make great memories! You are incredibly hardworking, humble, caring and funny, and loved by all your friends and family.”
The post included an old photo of Jon holding him as a baby, followed by a recent image of Jon helping him into a suit jacket. It’s clear that while his television family may have disintegrated, his genuine support system is stronger than ever.
