YouTuber Jesse Ridgway and Ashley Make Heartbreaking Decision Following Down Syndrome Diagnosis
Jesse Ridgway, a well-known YouTuber, and his partner Ashley recently shared the somber news that they have terminated their pregnancy after receiving a diagnosis indicating a high likelihood of Down syndrome.
The couple revealed this painful decision on their Instagram account on Wednesday, as reported by Page Six.
“This week, my wife and I faced the incredibly tough choice to end the pregnancy due to Trisomy 21,” Jesse Ridgway stated.
According to the CDC, Trisomy 21, more commonly referred to as Down syndrome, is a genetic disorder characterized by the presence of an extra chromosome in an individual’s cells.
The CDC explains that this additional chromosome can significantly impact both physical and cognitive development, leading to various challenges. Children with Down syndrome may experience developmental delays, including slower speech acquisition compared to their peers.
In March, the couple announced their pregnancy, and by April, they disclosed that there was a 95% chance their baby would be affected by Down syndrome. Ridgway emphasized that the decision was not made lightly.

“We are heartbroken. This has been an incredibly traumatic experience for both of us, particularly for Ashley,” he shared, noting that Ashley had the “procedure earlier this week” and that “everything went as planned.”
He expressed that they both feel emotionally exhausted, highlighting that the likelihood of a child being born with Trisomy 21 is approximately “1 in 1000.”
“When I first learned about this diagnosis, I was both shocked and hopeful,” he reflected. “If the child was a little slower in their learning, I thought we could adapt. I became a parent knowing I would face challenges, but I didn’t fully comprehend what living with Down syndrome would truly mean.”
Jesse Ridgway shared insights into the health implications associated with Down syndrome, which can include a reduced life expectancy, poor muscle tone, and compromised immune systems.
“Down syndrome isn’t a ‘blessing’; it presents significant challenges from a health standpoint,” he stated. “I was unaware of the harsh realities for the child and the family… often, they rely entirely on others for their entire lives.”
Message from Ridgway to the Community
While Ridgway mentioned that “up to 90% of women choose to terminate their pregnancy upon learning their child has Trisomy 21,” Healthline reports that the actual figure in the U.S. is about 67%, with higher statistics in countries like Denmark at 98% and France at 77%.
“I think this is partly because many of these decisions are made in private, leading to feelings of shame and judgment,” he explained. “No one anticipates finding themselves in such a situation until it occurs, and everything shifts.”
