Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. Return in Bloody First Trailer for ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Sequel

Sony Pictures has officially dropped the first trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer, reviving the iconic slasher franchise nearly three decades after its original release. The new film, set to hit theaters July 18, brings back fan favorites Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. as Julie James and Ray Bronson — now older, more haunted, and forced to confront the blood-soaked consequences of a secret they thought they’d escaped.

Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the film serves as a direct continuation of the 1997 and 1998 films, intentionally skipping over the third installment. The story picks up in the present day, where the past horror resurfaces in a new town, targeting a fresh group of teens connected to the original hit-and-run cover-up.

Hewitt and Prinze Jr. return as reluctant survivors pulled back into the nightmare, forced to reckon with their past just as a new generation becomes the target of the hook-wielding killer. The trailer teases familiar beats — tense chases, fog-drenched docks, and ominous notes reading “I STILL Know” — while introducing a new bloodline of victims.

Joining the returning stars is a cast of rising talent, including Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), Chase Sui Wonders (Bodies Bodies Bodies), Lola Tung (The Summer I Turned Pretty), and Nicholas Alexander Chavez (General Hospital). Rounding out the ensemble are Austin Nichols, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Billy Campbell, Sarah Pidgeon, and Gabbriette.

While Sarah Michelle Gellar was approached to reprise her role as Helen Shivers, the actress ultimately passed, noting the difficulty in resurrecting a character whose death in the original film was one of the franchise’s most memorable moments.

The project, co-written by Robinson and Sam Lansky, was initially pitched in late 2022. Longtime producer Neal H. Moritz returns, ensuring the sequel stays true to the franchise’s bloody roots while evolving its story for a new generation of horror fans.

Camila Mendes was originally attached to the project but exited due to scheduling conflicts with Amazon MGM’s Masters of the Universe. Production began in November 2024, with cinematographer Elisha Christian behind the camera, capturing the eerie atmosphere of a franchise built on paranoia, secrets, and survival.

With a mix of nostalgia and new blood, I Know What You Did Last Summer promises to bring the screams back to theaters this July. And if the trailer is any indication, no one is safe when the truth comes crawling back.
