Ryan Coogler Sets Sights on ‘X-Files’ Reboot After ‘Sinners’ Debut, Says New Series Will Be “Really F*ing Scary”**

Fresh off the success of his R-rated vampire thriller Sinners, director Ryan Coogler is officially turning his focus to something even darker—reviving The X-Files.

In a recent interview on Last Podcast on the Left, Coogler revealed that the reboot of the iconic supernatural detective series is his “immediately next” project, and he’s more than ready. “I’ve been excited about that for a long time and I’m fired up to get back to it,” he said. “Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really fucking scary.”

Coogler has a proven talent for reimagining legacy franchises—first with Creed, the electrifying continuation of Rocky, and then with Black Panther, which redefined what a Marvel blockbuster could be. Now, he’s preparing to breathe eerie new life into a series that defined a generation of TV: The X-Files.

The original series, which ran from 1993 to 2001 and returned for two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018, followed FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) as they investigated unexplained and paranormal cases across the country. Coogler confirmed that he’s already spoken with Anderson—though she was busy filming Tron: Ares at the time of their last conversation. “She’s incredible, and fingers crossed there,” he added.

The reboot will be developed under Coogler’s deal with Walt Disney Television, marking another major studio collaboration for the director. While plot details remain under wraps, Coogler’s comments hint at a darker, more intense tone for the new series—one aimed not just at long-time fans, but at a new audience as well.

“We’re going to try to make something really great, bro,” Coogler said, “something for the real X-Files fans and maybe find some new ones.”
