Anjelica Huston Reveals Private Battle With Cancer: “I’m at the Four-Year Mark and Feeling Grateful”
|Anjelica Huston is opening up for the first time about a deeply personal health journey — a previously undisclosed battle with cancer that she quietly faced following her role in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.
In a recent interview with People magazine, the Oscar-winning actress revealed that she was diagnosed shortly after filming the 2019 action hit. While Huston chose not to disclose the specific type of cancer, she shared that the experience shifted her perspective on life in profound ways.
“I managed to survive it, and I’m proud of myself,” she said. “It’s not something that came lightly… It came as a big shock, but it made me conscious of what I shouldn’t do, of places I shouldn’t go.”
Rather than let fear define her experience, Huston embraced a new approach to life — one marked by joy, gratitude, and intentionality.
“One of those places was taking life too seriously,” she added. “So now when the opportunity arises, I laugh, and I try not to make a big deal out of things.”
Four Years Cancer-Free
Now 72, Huston says she is “in the clear” and approaching a powerful milestone.
“I’m at the four-year mark, and that means so much to me,” she said. “It’s a fantastic thing. I’m very proud of myself, and I’ve been very lucky. My doctors have been wonderful.”
Though she kept her diagnosis private for six years, Huston now believes in the importance of speaking out.
“Sometimes you feel like you don’t want to talk about it for the obvious reasons,” she admitted, “but there’s a lot to be said for talking about it and getting it out there — and celebrating the fact that one’s come through.”
Quiet Triumph
There was no flashy celebration when Huston got the good news. No parties, no press releases.
“I just walked in my garden and smelled the roses and thought how clever I was,” she said with a smile.
Huston, whose career has spanned decades and includes iconic roles in The Witches, The Addams Family, and Prizzi’s Honor — for which she won the Academy Award — has also continued to lend her voice to animated and sci-fi projects like The French Dispatch and Star Wars: The Bad Batch.
With her signature wit and enduring spirit, Anjelica Huston reminds us that strength can be quiet, survival can be graceful, and healing — sometimes — looks like standing in a garden and simply breathing in the moment.
