A 4-year-old Alabama boy who vanished was located deceased in a creek after his canine companion directed volunteer searchers to his remains
Preliminary medical examination showed no evidence of physical trauma or assault-related harm, authorities confirmed, while the official cause of death remains under investigation
The child’s father faces criminal charges unrelated to the disappearance case
Following the tragic discovery of a missing 4-year-old Alabama boy, law enforcement has released findings from the initial medical examination.

Initial Autopsy Findings Released
On Monday, January 5th, officials confirmed that preliminary examination revealed no indicators of trauma or assault-related wounds in the death of 4-year-old Johnathan Everett Boley, whose body was recovered from a creek, Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith announced during a media briefing covered by NBC affiliate WVTM.
“Any definitive conclusions await additional laboratory analysis,” Smith stated regarding the cause of death, which continues to be investigated.
The Walker County Coroner’s office had not provided additional information to PEOPLE at the time of inquiry.
The Disappearance
On December 31st, approximately 11:30 a.m. local time, Boley was last observed at the 7000 block of Highway 195 in Jasper, according to an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency alert. Authorities initially believed the 4-year-old faced potential danger.
That same afternoon, sheriff’s deputies received notification about the child’s disappearance around 12:30 p.m. local time, Smith explained during a Thursday, January 1st news briefing, NBC News documented. Reports indicated Boley was accompanied by his 6-year-old sibling and their family dog when he disappeared, the outlet noted. Law enforcement personnel immediately searched the children’s residence before launching aerial and ground search operations.
According to Smith’s statements to NBC News, the 4-year-old and his brother were staying with their father during his court-approved five-day annual visitation period when the incident occurred.
Discovery After Extensive Search
After an extensive search operation involving numerous agencies and hundreds of community volunteers, the young boy was discovered deceased at 12:55 p.m. on Friday, January 2nd, by members of a volunteer search team, Smith revealed during Monday’s press conference.
“A volunteer I interviewed mentioned spotting the dog initially, and the animal essentially guided them toward John-John’s location,” Smith explained, according to WVTM. “They were deeply shaken,” the sheriff observed about the volunteers, mentioning that one individual required medical assistance after experiencing a panic attack following the discovery.
“Naturally, you participate with good intentions,” he elaborated, “and despite believing you’ve mentally prepared yourself for what you might encounter, the reality is different.”
Loyal Companion Stayed by Child’s Side
Smith verified that the dog, named Buck, apparently remained with the child throughout the three-day period they were missing.
Father Faces Separate Criminal Charges
The child’s father, Jameson Kyle Boley, now faces criminal charges after narcotics and suspected explosive materials were discovered at his residence during the search operation.
On December 31st, Jameson was taken into custody and charged with unlawful manufacture of a destructive device, classified as a class B felony, Smith stated, according to WVTM. He additionally faces two counts of chemical endangerment of a child, both class C felonies.
“These criminal charges exist independently from John-John’s disappearance,” Smith emphasized to media representatives on Monday, subsequently clarifying that methamphetamine was allegedly discovered inside the father’s home.
“After completing our investigation and receiving an official cause of death determination,” he added, “all evidence will be assembled and submitted to the district attorney for evaluation.”

Community Mourns Tragic Loss
The heartbreaking conclusion to this search has left the Walker County community grieving. The dedicated efforts of volunteer searchers, who combed through challenging terrain for days, underscore the community’s commitment to finding the missing child, even as the outcome they hoped for turned to tragedy.
The faithful dog Buck’s role in guiding searchers to the child has resonated deeply with those following the case, demonstrating the profound bond between the boy and his canine companion during his final hours.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to piece together the circumstances that led to this devastating outcome while the community remembers a young life cut tragically short.
